This novelette kicks off the series and introduces the main recurring characters.

 

In the first book, A.J. returns to Denver after a lengthy  self-imposed exile to help Dom and his brother, Dan, as they seek to unravel a  financial mess that treatens to become a case of embezzlement against Dan.

A.J.'s return to Denver means having to face old friends he has disappointed in the past and dealing with old adversaries, including a brutish cop named Ed Pacheco. The case also brings A.J. up against his main nemesis, Pepe Manzanares, an oily car sales mogul known as The Panamanian Midget. A.J. suspects The Midget of embezzling the $75,000, but before he can uncover the evidence, Pepe disappears and is presumed murdered.
 
Dom disappears at the same time and is considered the prime suspect. A.J. has only 48 hours to clear his dear friend Dom of murder and the brother of taking the money.
